Fine Motor Skills for All Ages Available!

While working on the cutting and writing sections of our preschool I realized that I was skipping over a crucial element, fine motor skills. After some research I stumbled on a site that had some great suggestions and helped break down what I needed to know to continue. Without further ado, here is our introduction to our Fine Motor Skills PDF with 73 different activities.

Welcome to our Fine Motor Skills section!

You have probably heard about “fine motor skills” but what exactly do children need to do to develop these skills before writing? Thanks to Therapy Street for Kids, we found a breakdown of what children need to know before they can start practicing writing and some fun ways to help them learn. Some fine motor skills they will practice are fine motor strength, thumb opposition, crossing the midline, pincer grasp, finger isolation, eye-hand coordination, hand arches, bilateral coordination, upper body strength, and in-hand manipulation. You can learn more about these skills, and other helpful tips, on the Therapy Street for Kids website.

Note that most of these activities are “pre-writing” skills necessary for the children to master before moving on to actual writing. If your group is beyond the basics then feel free to move on to the next writing curriculum we have available.

It is also important to remember that even though your child is older, doesn’t mean they don’t need to continue honing in on their fine motor skills. Many of these activities are probably things you are already doing! If you find your child is struggling with a skill set (such as fine motor strength), simply find an activity marked with the skill (“FS” in this case) and practice away!

Best of luck,

Serena
