Craft: Fossil Cookies, 2-3 Year Olds

Today we made fossil cookies as part of our craft. Bug has gotten really into helping us bake cookies so we decided to use his love and make something fun with our friends too.

We got the recipe from Michelle's Party Plan-It but we ended up needing to add a lot of flour so we could roll it into balls. Also, I highly suggest having the ingredients in separate bowls so the kids can just dump it in without having to measure it. At least do this for the peanut butter! Here is what we did.

Materials needed:

  • Mixing bowl

  • Mixing spoon

  • Ungreased cookie sheet

  • 2 cups of sugar

  • 2 eggs

  • 2 cups of peanut butter

  • Flour

  • Plastic Bug

Instructions:

  1. Place your sugar, eggs, and peanut butter in the bowl. Mix well.

  2. Add flour until the consistency is thick enough to roll into a ball with your hands. This was about 1.5 cups for us (although we were just spooning it in and mixing so it wasn't exact).

  3. Roll the dough into balls and place on an ungreased cookie sheet.

  4. Lightly flatten the dough with your palm.

  5. Clean off your plastic bugs with soap and water and dry.

  6. Lightly dust them with flour.

  7. Place your bug of choice upside down on your cookie and squish gently in until it leaves an imprint. Then pull off.

  8. Repeat until all the cookies have bug "fossils" on them.

  9. Bake at 350 (375 if your oven is like ours) degrees for 15 minutes and then check until done.

Ta-da! The kids were able to do pretty much every step with some minor adult assistance. After they're done baking, let them cool and serve with a glass of milk. Yum!

I want to do more baking for craft time.
